I created Brave Brown Girls to inspire my daughters by sharing the amazing things that brown women are doing all around the world.

This fun book is filled with stories of young girls facing challenges, breaking boundaries, and achieving their dreams.

It’s available for download so you can share these inspiring tales with your children too. I believe in inclusivity and in inspiring everyone to recognize their potential, no matter where they come from.

Why Representation Matters for Kids of Color

As a mom, I know how important it is for kids to see themselves in the stories they read and the shows they watch. I have a 7-year-old daughter with big emotions, and one day she came home from school with questions on why she looks different than most girls in her school.

She asked me about her skin color, and I could tell that underneath her questions were worries about her self-worth and her place in the world.

It made me realize that she needed to see more stories that reflect who she is, stories that show her that brown girls are just as strong, successful, and amazing as anyone else.

That moment inspired me to create Brave Brown Girls—a book filled with stories of girls who look like her, who come from different parts of the world, and who are doing incredible things.

Representation matters because it shapes how kids see themselves and what they believe they can do.

When kids of color see characters who look like them doing amazing things, it helps them dream big and believe in themselves.

For too long, children’s books have lacked diversity. Stories that celebrate kids of color, their cultures, and their unique strengths are still too rare.

This lack of representation can leave kids feeling invisible or unimportant, especially when the heroes they read about don’t look like them.

But books like Brave Brown Girls help fill that gap by sharing real, relatable role models who inspire confidence, pride, and a sense of belonging.

In Brave Brown Girls, my daughter and others like her can read about girls like Simranjit, who fearlessly chased her dream of becoming an Olympic boxer; Amandeep, who overcame her fears to share her powerful poetry with the world; and Ridhima, who stood up for the environment at just nine years old. These stories teach young readers that they can be brave, creative, and determined—just like the girls in the book. They can see that they too have the power to do great things, no matter what challenges they face.

I want my daughter to know that her skin color is beautiful, and it is part of what makes her strong.

When she reads about Karenjeet, the first female Sikh powerlifter to represent Team Great Britain, or Harnaam, who embraced her unique appearance and became a motivational speaker, she learns that being different is something to celebrate.

She learns that she doesn’t need to change to fit in—she can be proud of who she is and find strength in being herself.

Representation is not just about seeing someone who looks like you—it’s about feeling seen, heard, and valued.

It’s about knowing that your story matters and that you are not alone. For kids of color, representation in books is a powerful way to build self-esteem and encourage them to dream without limits.

When they see role models who share their background, culture, or experiences, they begin to understand that they too can be leaders, athletes, artists, and change-makers.

By sharing the stories in Brave Brown Girls, I hope to inspire not only my daughter but also other kids who might need a reminder that they belong and that they are capable of greatness.

I want them to see that the world is full of possibilities, and that they have every right to explore, create, and succeed.

These young girls remind us that bravery, persistence, and believing in yourself can help overcome even the toughest challenges.

Whether it’s competing in a sport, sharing your talent, standing up for a cause, or creating something new, each of us has the power to make a difference.

What inspires you to keep going when things get tough? Remember, just like these incredible girls, you have the strength within you to achieve great things—just keep going, believing, and shining bright!
